The Deepdene Safe Deposit Centre & Business Lounge, Dorking

The brief:

Our client wanted to create a space that effortlessly transitioned from day to night and served a multitude of purposes. Influences came from the film industry and the safety deposit box business that shares the space, with an overarching desire to create a members club atmosphere. 

Our approach: 

Our design needed to cross over from commercial fitouts into hospitality by way of traditional office. The maximalism element came in the form of a myriad of textures and patterns – creating a space that felt luxe and indulgent but not cluttered or busy. Layout designs were also crucial as we needed to balance casual dining areas with a bar, acoustic booths, ‘perching’ spaces, meeting rooms, lobby areas, storage and cloakroom facilities.

Maxed out

The MPL design team artfully blended a number of textural, form and design movement influences to achieve the look. From Art Deco details to urban loft elements, the skill was bringing the eclectic sources together to form a cohesive design. To do this we included a number of recurring themes to ‘ground’ the look: a rich shade of teal, quilted upholstery, wooden slats, tessellated floor and wall designs - especially herringbone - gilded finishing touches and stone-effect surfaces, including an illuminated Corian® bar counter.

Tech take up

For all its glamour and style, this hybrid space incorporates some sophisticated technology. The screens dotted around the walls and in the booths are ‘The Frame’ by Samsung, with each displaying a customizable piece of art when the space switches to nighttime mode. Elsewhere, the cloakrooms feature Alavo vanity systems from Dolphin. This mirror and sink combination features a hidden tap, soap dispenser and hand dryer system, operated by a motion sensor for a no-touch experience.
