MPL was approached by Leica – a global manufacturer of cameras, lenses and viewing experiences – to help with the worldwide launch of the Cine 1 Laser TV UST (ultra short throw) projector. This was to be Leica’s first cinema TV, with installations at its Duke Street premises in Mayfair and in its Harrods concession.
The Leica Cine 1 is being marketed to purchasers as an experience that should be enjoyed in person, so the brief was to prepare both retail spaces to facilitate in-store demonstrations. The resulting retail design needed to be sleek, user friendly and fall in line with Leica’s current in-store display policy.
Additionally and as shop fitters in London, MPL was asked to carry out a number of refurbishment tasks in the Mayfair showroom’s basement to make the space more functionally viable.
Past collaborations with premium electrical brand Bang & Olufsen gave MPL a huge technical advantage. This expertise and first-fix knowledge allowed us to work quickly and with ease.
The first stage was to remove the current joinery installation and create a neat alcove for the screen. Our technical drawings then had to take into account the specification of the Cine 1, especially the UST nature of the product and the optimum distance between the projector and the screen. Once the power and data supplies were in place, MPL completed a full redecoration and made good the entire area.
Our attention then turned to the basement space within the Mayfair premises. The Leica team wanted to create an additional meeting room, so MPL interiors used glass partitions to create a separate area and we added some bespoke storage to help keep the room tidy. After the work was complete, a full redecoration took place.
Focus then fell on the larger, existing meeting room. MPL was asked to design and install a new bank of storage cupboards with an integral drinks station. We opted for a very minimalist, floor-to-ceiling design with a cubby hole perfect for a kettle and a coffee machine. MPL also supplied design concepts to personalise the space, initiating a new gallery wall art installation.
The final piece of the basement was to create a new, secure store room for stock, specified in line with high-value insurance requirements. MPL’s installers managed the project so the Leica store was able to stay open and fully operational during the fit out works.
The MPL team is no stranger to department store concessions, having completed works within Selfridges and Harrods – the latter as part of a project with NuConnect. Our return to Harrods saw us replicate the Cine 1 installation – reconfiguring to accommodate the projector and screen – as well as installing a new illuminated Leica sign.
As with our prior work within Harrods, the MPL team had to follow meticulous protocol in terms of site access, design approval, safety and security.
